Former NBA athlete and present basketball coach Danny Manning was born on May 17th, 1966, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, to his proud parents Ed Manning and Darnelle Manning. 

Danny’s father, Edward R. Manning, aka Ed Manning, was also an American professional basketball athlete. After his basketball career, he worked as a college and NBA assistant coach. He passed away on March 4th, 2011.

Professional Career

Los Angeles Clippers 

During the 1988 NBA draft, the Los Angeles Clippers drafted Manning as the first overall pick. As a rookie, Danny played only 26 games in the season.

Unfortunately, after his Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) was torn, he had to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery.

However, Danny returned during the 1989–1990 season. Moreover, his most productive NBA season was 1992–1993.

Atlanta Hawks

The Los Angeles Clippers traded Danny to the Atlanta Hawks on February 24th, 1994. While representing the Atlanta Hawks, Danny won the  NBA All-Star honors in 1993 and 1994.

Before the 1999-2000 season, Danny was traded by the Pheonix Suns to Orlando Magic and was afterward traded by the Orlando Magic to the Milwaukee Bucks.

Assistant Coach

After Manning announced his retirement, he started working at the University of Kansas as the student-athlete development director. Also, he was a team manager under coach Bill Self.

Moreover, he was promoted as an assistant coach at the end of the 2006–2007 season. He became an essential element of the college team’s coaching staff.

During his time as a Kansas University assistant coach, Danny became one of the country’s best coaches of big men. Altogether, he trained 12 NBA draft picks and many All-Americans recruits.

Furthermore, Danny spent nine years with Kansas and was part of two Final Fours, one NCAA national title, eight Big 12 regular-season conference titles, five NCAA Elite Eight appearances, 269 career victories five Big 12 tournament championships.

Head Coach

Danny became the head coach at the University of Tulsa on April 4th, 2012. During his first year as a head coach of Golden Hurricane, the team recorded an overall score of 17–16.

Tulsa was considered the nation’s fifth-least-experienced team, but Manning helped the team improve their previous set record, and the team soon evolved as the C-USA regular-season leader.

Additionally, the team also won the conference tournament and progressed onto the NCAA tournament the first time after 2003.

While representing the Tusla, Manning won the 2014 Conference USA Coach of the Year honors.

Head Coach for Wake Forest

Moreover, on April 4th, 2014, Danny joined Wake Forest University as the head coach. He supervised 14 players who went on to play professionally, from which NBA players John Collins and Jaylen Hoard were also included. 

During his time at Wake Forest, the team became part of the top 10 teams in offensive efficiency. After the end of the same season, Danny won the Skip Prosser Man of the Year honors.

Furthermore, The Wake Forest authorities dismissed Danny on April 25th, 2020, as they wanted a change in their head coaching position.

During his dismissal, Danny stated-

“I AM VERY GRATEFUL… THE CHANCE TO LEAD THE WAKE FOREST MEN’S BASKETBALL PROGRAM, I AM VERY PROUD OF ALL THE STUDENT-ATHLETES I COACHED, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO EARNED THEIR DEGREES.”

Reportedly, Danny signed a six-year contract extension with Wake Forest in 2017, and after his dismissal, he owes more than $15 million from the Wake Forest University.

International Career

Manning is familiar with the USA national team as an athlete and a coach as well. In 1988, he was part of the all-amateur USA national basketball team that competed at the Summer Olympics.

Moreover, as a coach, Danny was a court coach for the 2014 USA Men’s U18 National Team training camp. The team won the Gold Medal during that year.
